Day 1: Arrival in Kasese & Transfer to Base Camp

Arrive in Kasese (by road from Kampala/Entebbe or flight)
Transfer to Nyakalengija (base camp)
Meet your guides and porters, gear check, and trek briefing
Overnight: Base camp huts or lodge
Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Nyakalengija (1,646m) – Nyabitaba Hut (2,651m)

Trek through montane forest with chances to see Colobus monkeys and Turacos
Cross the Mubuku River and climb to Nyabitaba Hut
Trek time: 5–6 hours
Overnight: Nyabitaba Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Nyabitaba – John Matte Hut (3,505m)

Pass through bamboo and heather zones
Cross Bujuku River via Kurt Shafer Bridge
Amazing views of Mt. Stanley and Mt. Speke
Trek time: 6–7 hours
Overnight: John Matte Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: John Matte – Bujuku Hut (3,962m)

Enter the alpine zone with giant lobelias and groundsels
Trail may be muddy — waterproof boots are essential
Reach Bujuku Hut with views of Lake Bujuku and glacier-clad peaks
Trek time: 4–5 hours
Overnight: Bujuku Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Bujuku – Elena Hut (4,541m)

Ascend steep trails toward Mt. Stanley
Reach Elena Hut, high-altitude base for summiting Margherita Peak
Early dinner and rest ahead of summit attempt
Trek time: 3–4 hours
Overnight: Elena Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6: Summit Margherita Peak (5,109m) – Descend to Kitandara Hut

Early start with crampons and ice axes for the Margherita Glacier
Reach Margherita Peak, Africa’s 3rd-highest point
Celebrate at the summit, then descend to Kitandara Hut
Trek time: 10–12 hours
Overnight: Kitandara Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7: Descend to Base Camp – Transfer to Kasese

Descend via Freshfield Pass and through the Nyamuleju and Guy Yeoman huts
Return to Nyakalengija
Farewell to guides and porters
Optional overnight in Kasese or transfer onward
Trek time: 7–9 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Packing Essentials:

  • Warm clothing (temperatures drop below freezing at high altitudes)
  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Thermal base layers and socks
